The new Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD 1 TB drive is positioned by the manufacturer as a high-speed external drive for work and games. Indeed, in tests, he proved to be extremely quick in both reading and writing data, but he also has a couple of other trump cards.
Our test lab was visited by a new 1TB Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD model, which is based on a SATA drive and a very reliable controller with data transfer via USB 3.1 using the new USB 3.2 Gen2 technology. This provides the model with, on the one hand, the low cost of a gigabyte of information compared to the NVMe data bus, and on the other hand, very good speed performance. As a result, this disc demonstrates an excellent price / quality ratio. We tested this drive in synthetic benchmarks and in real conditions, connecting it to the laptop as an external working SSD drive.
It is worth noting that modern solid state drives are still expensive enough to completely replace the HDD. Nevertheless, if you use them as an external disk for transferring data and even as a “removable” working one – they are comparable in speed to internal SSD disks, which is extremely valuable for operations with big data.
The disc comes in a compact box made of very dense cardboard, decorated in the Seagate style of the Barracuda disc line – a black background with light green accents. In addition to the SSD drive itself, two cables are included in the kit – USB 3.0 – USB Type-C and USB Type-C – USB Type-C. The second is useful if your laptop does not have free regular USB ports.
The Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD drive is made in the form of an almost square flat box, comparable in size to 2.5-inch drives. In the design of the top cover, attention is drawn to the slightly raised aluminum plate around the perimeter painted green, and in its center is the name of the manufacturer in thin white letters. It all looks stylish and a bit futuristic. The gamer design element adds a line of green LED-backlight, which lights up when the drive is connected to a PC.
The lower part of the case is made of plastic and does not stand out with anything remarkable. There is only a sticker with the data of the carrier and no protective elements or rubber feet against slipping are provided. It is a pity that the kit does not even have a cloth case for carrying – the edges of the upper plate are quite sharp and can scratch something in your purse. So, we recommend that you allocate a separate pocket for it.
We connected a test sample of the BarraCuda Fast SSD with a capacity of 1 TB to a laptop with an Intel Core i7 CPU and a 220 GB SanDisk SSD and 2 TB Seagate HDD installed as a system disk. Accordingly, practical tests for copying 15 GB of data were carried out from both disks. reading speeds are different.
But first, we’ll tell you how the drive with synthetic tests showed itself. In the benchmark CristalDiskMark SSD showed very good results: the write speed of large files was 420 Mb / s, and read – 423 Mb / s.
The AS SSD Benchmark benchmark showed slightly lower results: 420 and 413 Mb / s, respectively, for writing and reading. The same test also demonstrates data access time: during read operations, it is 0.140 ms, and records – 0.152 ms, which can be considered a good result for an external drive in this price category.
But ATTO Benchmark surprised with simply outstanding performance – about 460 Mb / s for reading and writing. Such high speeds have not yet been demonstrated by any of the external SSDs we tested.
In Windows 10, when copying about 15 GB of video files with a volume of more than 3 GB each from the internal HDD to a test external SSD drive, the data transfer speed reached 104 MB / s, but around the middle of the process it was uploaded to 93 MB / s.
A more impressive result was obtained when copying the same video files from the internal SSD to the test external SSD – the data transfer rate reached 327 MB / s, which is comparable to the speeds on the SATA bus. Accordingly, no brakes with the processing of big data, for example, in graphic editors or during video editing, should not occur when working directly from this disk.
By the way, the disk is formatted in the eXFAT file system and is compatible with most mobile devices. But for working with smartphones on Android, in order to be able to record files on it (for example, to take off photos while traveling), it is better to format it in FAT32.
The external drive Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD 1TB liked the nice design of the case, which is decorated with green LED-backlight, compact size and high speed data processing. An important point is the stability of the data transfer parameters, despite the large volumes. Value for money at the time of the test for this SSD can be described as good, although its price (about 11,000 rubles for the 1 TB version) probably includes a prestige factor. Conveniently, the manufacturer took care of an additional USB-C cable and proprietary software, which includes the functions of synchronizing files from different PCs and backup.
