Design
There are two versions: with and without Blu-ray drive. Because of this, there is a difference in price.
The size of the PlayStation 5 is a small PC, but compared to the Xbox Series X and even more so Series S, it is huge. Even in comparison to the PS4, we are a giant.
This is due to cooling: a lot of space inside is occupied by a radiator for cooling.
Thanks to this, the console does not heat up and does not make noise!
I will say one thing. What IKEA taught us with their Scandinavian approach. Household appliances, which include the console, should be designed so that, if desired, they do not attract too much attention in the interior. In this case, both the dimensions and the design are implemented in such a way that when you enter the room you cannot fail to notice the PlayStation 5. And for me this is a strange decision.
There is a special stand for horizontal placement. And, of course, the surface on the console and gamepad is covered with tiny PlayStation symbols: squares, circles, triangles.
Performance
The heart of the PlayStation 5 is AMD’s custom Zen 2 processor that can deliver up to 10 teraflops of power.
One of the cooling features of the console is the use of liquid metal on a crystal.
Especially Sony is promoting a custom and fast SSD with a dedicated controller. Thanks to this, loading the console, games and levels within them, as well as switching between worlds, should be very fast.
It takes about 20 seconds for the console to turn on.
And it takes about 30 seconds to switch between games: we launched the platform game, after that we switched to the Demon’s Souls remaster.
In a special demo game Astro’s Playroom, you can quickly switch between rooms.
Video performance
One of the new generation features is ray tracing. Most common demo: These are shiny surfaces in the new Spider-Man. And the game can run in two modes: beautiful with ray tracing at 30 frames per second or productive at 60 FPS.
Why can’t you make a beautiful one at 60 FPS? The console is just coming out, and already some compromises. Okay…
By the way, on the box we are promised 8K-resolution or 4K 120FPS, you know. Interestingly, it doesn’t support 1440p resolution.
And it says on the box – the volume is 825 GB. But in fact, 667 GB is available to us. We are talking about the storage – the place where we will upload games.
However, there is good news – the games themselves may start to take less. For example, Destiny 2 weighs in at around 50GB.
The PlayStation 5 does not have a slot for a memory card, but inside there is a PCI 4.0 connector for connecting additional SSD storage. I wonder how this is supposed to be done?
The console has three USB Type-A ports and one USB Type-C. Thus, you can connect external storage to the PlayStation 5, but you cannot run games from it – they must be copied to the internal SSD.
DualSense
The new controller is called DualSense, while there used to be a DualShock. In terms of tactile sensations, there are two important points:
- New haptic motors. They are big. Judging by the analysis, there are 2 of them in each handle. They are powerful and very accurate. But there is a feeling that there are more of them, because they vibrate with different frequencies: as if you simultaneously picked up a cheap Xiaomi with a rattling vibration and an iPhone with a noble haptic. About the same feeling, but stronger.
- Hammer resistance system. For example, when drawing a bow, pulling the trigger is more difficult. And you have to make an effort.
Thanks to all this vibration feedback, you really feel on what surface the hero is walking.
But most importantly, sound works together with vibration!
Astro’s Playroom is not even a demo for users anymore, but an instruction for game developers: it’s raining – DualSense, pulling a rope – it’s the same.
By the way. the controller also changed the speaker and got better. The DualShock was kind of squeaky.
How is it used in games? In Demon’s Souls, the sound of a sword hitting objects comes from the controller speaker. Not the swing itself, but the physical interaction. That is, the gamepad is responsible for the character’s weapon, what he has in his hands, or what he is in contact with the reality of the game.

Nobody speaks. But the accelerometer has become more accurate and faster. It allows you to aim. And it’s really convenient.
We also added a microphone to the controller so that you can chat even if you don’t have a headset. In fact, there are even two microphones here, perhaps the second is used for noise reduction. By the way, the controller can be connected to the computer as a microphone, not a gamepad.
Lifetime
An important issue is autonomy. Since there were and still are few satisfied with the DualShock 4 battery life.
A 1560 mAh battery is installed here against 1000 mAh in the past DualShock 4. The increase is good, but there are also noticeably more chips.
Well, and most importantly, all these features are not supported everywhere and not by all games. So, as if the bow pull is not an exclusive feature of exclusive PlayStation 5 games.
Games
The app store immediately shamelessly teases with exclusives, even those that have no release date.
There are still questions with backward compatibility: some games are delayed, for example Deus Ex.
Games have been added to the PS Plus subscription, including PlayStation hits like Last Of Us and God Of War.
But the main thing is that there is a starter kit of exclusives. This is, firstly, Demon’s Souls – the hit of the PlayStation 3 and it looks very cool, as well as the new Spider-Man: Miles Moralez. Although the latter is said to be an extended addition, it is short, but driving and beautiful. There is also a Sackboy platform.
Software
Perhaps the biggest joy for me is the fast work of the software. Finally!

This console turns on quickly, and it runs quietly on its own. It has a decent cooling system and design. You know, I was in the forefront who said that it was at least strange, as the maximum hell knows how to put it at home so that it looks organic. And in fact, you know the console is very nice, a lot of all sorts of interesting elements and very organic in fact. 1 trick sounds like this – the design is cool, the console is fast and quiet, and generally technological.

It is compatible and generally a smooth transition. Everything under my account is available and on the fingers of one hand, in my opinion, you can count those games that are not supported. And these are some kind of indie projects, but in general all the games that you played, but did not pass, you can immediately play safely on ps5. By the way, you can watch a movie, the console reproduces up to 8k and HDMI is included in the kit.
In general, in fact, with games at the start, no matter how strange it sounds, there are no special problems. For example, I enjoy playing the games that I have played before, of course FIFA 21, of course, it will be updated. I fly into FIFA 21 on PlayStation 5 and my Lionel Messi somehow runs and hits even more fun than it was before, you know? Here is the placebo effect, it works in its purest form. I want to say about the PS Plus subscription, it is needed to play online.

The design has changed, of course the ergonomics, it has become, in my opinion, a little more, due to this, of course, it has become more pleasant to hold it. Well, somehow it feels very cool, right here it is cool, I have been playing on it for more than a week, and you already know back, but I don’t want dualshock 4 at all. It’s a cool thing, I like the ergonomics and build quality.

Exclusives. At this point, PlayStation is often bought exclusively for exclusives. Some of them are later released, including on PC, we remember Horizon, but there are things that remain on the PlayStation, this is of course God of War, this is definitely a game of 2018, this is some The Last of Us part 2, which I sure will be a game this year. But there are these things that move consoles, this is what the PlayStation 5 is already showing at the start, what is squeezed out of it in the Sony studio and respect and respect to them!

This is not a console, well, that is, not a game console in its pure form, it is really a media combine. Firstly, we remember the Ultra HD drive, and secondly, we are saying that right at the start all these wonderful services like Netflix, YouTube and so on are preinstalled for you. You know that it is fast, powerful and modern. PlayStation 5 is really not in its pure form, the console is already such a mini-PC in a good sense of the word.
You do not need to constantly fool around with the drivers, it is updated often, already in a week until it was updated twice with me and I have no special complaints about the interface, I have no problems with interacting with the console. Everything works quite quickly and smoothly. Therefore, if you have an awesome TV, then please buy a PlayStation 5 and enjoy all the content, including video! As you understand, there are much more chips, I just decided not to divide them into small ones, but to divide them directly into large blocks.
Conclusion
In this nextgen so far it turns out like this: Xbox is more about technology, numbers and pragmatics, and Sony is about emotions, games and the right hemisphere, if you like.
