In 2019, Microsoft is trying to solidify its presence in the “regular” laptop market with the introduction of the next generation Surface Laptop. Now these laptops are bigger, more powerful and more suitable for daily use than their predecessors.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 Consumer Report 2020
In the third generation Microsoft Surface Laptop has two screen sizes. So, the basic will remain a 13.5-inch IPS-matrix with an aspect ratio of 3: 2, which gives an advantage when working with tables, documents and graphic editors. The screen resolution is 2256 x 1504 pixels. The large Surface Laptop received a 15-inch display with a resolution of 2496 × 1664 pixels while maintaining the “squareness”. By the way, regardless of the version, all Surface Laptop 3 screens are touchscreen (PixelSense).
Case and keyboard
The “chip” of previous generations of the laptop – the Alcantara coating – in the third iteration became an option for which you will have to pay extra. The Surface Laptop 3 comes with an all-metal aluminum chassis by default. Although the new items do not set records for compactness and lightness, the manufacturer still emphasizes them. So, at the presentation, they said that the 15-inch version is 200 g lighter than the MacBook Pro 2019.
The touchpad area has been increased by 20%, which is especially useful for gestures in Windows. The laptop keyboard is backlit.
Processor, memory, communications
Microsoft not only decided to release an enlarged version, but also went on an experiment with different fillings. By the way, insiders said that in the third generation they would abandon Intel processors in favor of AMD products. This turned out to be true, but only partially.
The 13.5-inch Surface Laptop is powered by the 10th Gen Intel CPU Core hardware platform. These can be Core i5 and Core i7 Ice Lake processors. According to Microsoft, the capacity has doubled compared to the Surface Laptop 2. The chipset “tag” looks more interesting. There are Ryzen Surface Edition processors co-developed by Microsoft and AMD. As Redmonians say, these processors are the most powerful in the class.
All Surface Laptop 3 versions are content with integrated graphics. The 13.5-inch ones received not the most powerful Intel Iris Plus Graphics, but the older versions are equipped with an “embedded” up to the Radeon RX Vega 11.
The third generation has finally gotten a little customization by the owner. So, now you can replace the built-in SSD-drive. By the way, “out of the box” it can be 128, 256, 512 GB or 1 TB. But the RAM, as it was soldered on the board, remained – 8 or 16 GB.
Fortunately, the manufacturer decided to move away from minimalism with ports and interfaces in 2019. So, the long-awaited USB Type-C port appeared, which works together with the usual USB and 3.5 mm audio jack. Remained in the laptop and such a “throwback” as the proprietary Surface Connect connector. From our own side, we note that such a poor set of ports can be forgiven for a compact “trinash”, but why was there no place for additional USB Type-C on the large 15-inch version?
Interestingly, the newest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), with increased bandwidth, was received only by the younger version. AMD laptops are content with 802.11ac.
Microsoft has announced serious indicators of autonomy of new laptops – up to 11.5 hours on a single charge, regardless of the screen size. Present in Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 and fast charging, it allows you to recharge the battery by 80% in an hour.
